As recent political circumstances seem to be troubling some women, a good number of young women in the US are finding a cause in the South Korean 4B Movement—a movement that rejects marriage, childbirth, dating, and sexual relations with men.
The “4B” Movement stands for four phrases made up of Korean words, which are:
- Bihon (No Marriage)
- Bichulsan (No childbirth)
- Biyeonae (No Dating)
- Bisekseu (No Sex With Men)
How The Movement Started
The movement tells us a story of its origin around 2015 when women in South Korea began to take to the streets and demand better security and rights, and it is termed a Korea-centric feminism.
North of the border, however, is gaining traction among women who feel exasperated with gender inequality in the U.S., exacerbated by recent political developments.
The 4B Movement is seen by some U.S. women as a newfound opportunity rather than a challenge due to traditional expectations, as it began to combat the pregnancy and wage gap challenges of Korean women.
The recent outcomes of elections saw a similar American admiration for 4B in which they wanted to distance themselves from issues surrounding male perspectives on women’s rights as well as abortion.
What Are U.S. Women Talking About With Regard to 4B Movement?
The reason for many is that it is more personal today. Women such as Ashli Pollard and Alexa Vargas feel that this provides a chance to step out of the perceived traditional norms of women having to be given in marriage and bearing children.
